Democrats Win Hotly Debated Seat

Iowa District 82 held a special election this week after the passing of Rep. Curt Hanson. The primary candidates Phil Miller and Travis Harris actively pursued a contested seat covering Van Buren, Jefferson and Davis counties.

Harris ran several negative attack ads against Phil Miller for his trans-rights support.

The controversy surrounding the Republican party’s ads involved a teen transsexual who had committed suicide in Fairfield, IA less than a month before the anti-trans rights ad first ran. Harris’ support for these not only goes against current national policy but state laws. Miller won the election with 53.8 percent of the vote against Harris’ 44.5 percent. The remainder went to the Libertarian and Constitutional parties’ candidates.
